Ok。。。trying really， really hard to keep it short here。Trigger warning: mentions of physical abuse， verbal and financial abuse， body shaming， misogynyLike most reviewers before me mentioned already， this has some good old Legally Blonde vibes （basically Legally Blonde but it's a holiday novella）。 And you know， there's a lot to like about this story。 It's centered around a bubbly， unapologetically pink and "girly" MFC （or at least she starts to regain that part of herself）。 I do love reading about Ok。。。trying really， really hard to keep it short here。Trigger warning: mentions of physical abuse， verbal and financial abuse， body shaming， misogynyLike most reviewers before me mentioned already， this has some good old Legally Blonde vibes （basically Legally Blonde but it's a holiday novella）。 And you know， there's a lot to like about this story。 It's centered around a bubbly， unapologetically pink and "girly" MFC （or at least she starts to regain that part of herself）。 I do love reading about characters like this， because they don't usually exist in romance outside of the sphere reserved for OW， "that shallow b*tch out to steal MY MAN" or puck bunnies and all other women deigned "not marriage material" and other sexist stereotypes。The revenge plot and strong female friendships that weren't relegated to a subplot behind a romance were also a blast to read about。 Overall， I do think Morgan Elizabeth made some really important points telling this story and I appreciated that， it's just that a lot of times these points were made with an unwavering subtlety of a hammer， instead of flowing naturally from the story。If an author is trying to send a message through a book， I personally much prefer being talked TO than being talked AT， and that's what makes difference here， really。Other than that， Abbie and Damien's story was definitely cute， sweet and heart-warming most of the time。What spoiled it then？I will explain in three short points:⛔️ Abbie's ex， Richard， was an abusive ass who kept taking advantage of her， talking down at her and making her feel stupid and small - his boss， Damien， who Abbie starts going out with to get her revenge （at least at the beginning） was basically a total antithesis of Richard。 When going out with him， Abbie would sometimes revert back to her old ways when her past relationship trauma would speak up。 Damien's reaction？ Always utter perfection， he was really everything Richard was not。（I'm gonna say it， yes I'm gonna say it）He was too perfect 😅😭😭 And not in the way where I simply don't expect basic decency from men in real life anymore， and I project that onto my romance reading material。 In a way where， while characters can be decent and good， there should also be room for SOME flaws。 The way it was written， the Richard vs。 Damien situation was almost caricature-like。 And the way Abbie would idolize Damien and him being a lawyer （Richard was also one） - Richard would blow her off for work to defend scumbags， but Damien？ Damien only did so to take a pro bono case， he's a saint！ And don't get me wrong， he was generally a good guy， but when she went all "you're helping keep the scales of justice balanced"， I went full on LMAOOO because girl， he's a founding partner in an exclusive law firm， trust me， the last thing he does is helping the justice （nor matter how many pro bono cases with victims of domestic violence he takes， sorry not sorry） ¯\_（ツ）_/¯⛔️ At the same time， perhaps Damien was not all perfect， and despite me craving flaws， I add this to cons column simply because I'm sure this was not author's intention。 I found Damien so。。。domineering？ Like， Abbie mentions again and again how Richard would tell her what to do， what to wear， how to do her hair。。。Then at the end， we have a scene where Abigail gets ready for the holiday part at Damien's law firm and when Damien sees her in a simple black dress， he claims it's boring and "not her" and he goes to her closet to pick another dress， a pink one which HE judges to be more appropriate for HER。Which is a small thing， admittedly， and it's not like Abbie actually wanted to wear the black dress， but she did for a reason and。。。For the whole book we're told that Richard telling Abbie how to dress is Bad™， but when Damien does it it's GOOD， because he knows what's good for her。Make of it what you want， I didn't like it。 It'd have been fine， were it written just slightly differently， but the way it came off for me was icky， especially since Damien has a certain type （blonde， happy， pink） and while yes， Abbie is all that， I saw him picking that dress as his way making her conform to that type。（in reality it was probably not that deep， but I've been in a picky， hater mood for weeks and I will say what I want， sue me 😬😈）⛔️ Last but not least - sex scenes。 Some of them very spicy and hot， but as I mentioned before， Damien is domineering and dominant， and it could be really felt in those sex scenes。 It could've been totally hot if it was written well， but。。。it was not。 It really seemed more like Damien was her gym instructor and was talking her through cardio routine a lot of times: Now lift your arm！ Spread your legs！ Grab your tit！ Bend the knee！Either that， or they were actually playing Twister and he was giving her instructions 😂😂TL;DR: Could've been a great read， generally a message and story I appreciated about a woman finding herself again， but some things felt off。 But it definitely won't be my last book by Morgan Elizabeth， I'm curious now。 。。。more
